POPULATION
Buckie is a historic fishing town with a population of 8500 (2011 Census)
and there is a wide cross section of ages, interests and work patterns. The
town was built around traditional industries of the area – fishing, boatbuilding
and agriculture. However, as these industries have declined the
Oil & Gas Sector industries have replaced them.
Portgordon is a village with a population of 844 (2011 Census) and initially
grew around the fishing industry although it was well known for importing
coal for industries in and around the area. Like Buckie, traditional
industries have been largely replaced by the work in the Oil & Gas sector
industry, the local Maltings and Distilleries. Currently, there is an active
group working at regenerating the harbour area and opening a marina.
The South & West Church is situated in the centre of the town of Buckie
and the Enzie Church is located in Portgordon, approximately two miles
west. There are four Churches of Scotland in the area which are all
in the Presbytery of Moray and we enjoy Ecumenical links with other
denominations.
